Our final friendly against Friends

West Hobart v. Friends
Final Score Nil-all

Goalies: Bijou and Rosie

What a sentimental day for our players, coaches and parents – the last Primary soccer game in the Central Region roster to which we've belonged for the past 6 or 7 years.

Throughout that time, there's been a core group of around five players who've been there from the start, as well as other players who've come and gone each season. We’ve also had three coaches and lots of support from parents. Thanks!

And what was our last game like? Well it was a real contest, fast-paced and evenly matched, with both teams showing good skills.

Friends benefited from having two fine goalkeepers, with good teamwork from their mix of grade 5 and 6 players.

Cory says our West Hobart team has been a pleasure to coach for the past two years. He'd like all the girls to thank their parents, drivers, cheer squad, soccer boot scrapers, uniform washers, orange providers, scorers, umpires, subber-on of players, roster checkers, etc, etc, (and the lone blogger).

From us, a huge thanks to Cory for all his time and patience with the girls who had lots of fun and a very successful season…….

The end of season BBQ will be held in October – Cory will be in touch.

Elbows, arms along way to big win

West Hobart vs Southern Combined
Final Score: 5 - 1
Goal scorers: AJ - 4, Josie - 1
Goalies: Lauren and Nadia

West Hobart won this fast-moving, if occasionally spiteful match, by playing with terrific skill and tenacity. It was a very 'physical' (aka rough) game against Southern Combined in our debut match against them but our players showed good sportsmanship throughout.

The game was notable for a few misplaced elbows and shoving, with players from both sides needing a spell on the side, however there were no red or yellow cards.

We scored early, then kicked another four goals, maintaining relentless pressure throughout the match. Southern Combined scored their only goal early in the second half.

AJ's persistence and accurate kicking netted her an amazing four goals, including this penalty shot, awarded for a handball.

Our greatly improved ball skills and passes demonstrate how much West Hobart has improved since the start of this season. Thanks are due to Cory for his help and coaching.

Special thanks to Paul (Anna's dad) for umpiring the entire match, once again showing what a supreme athlete he is.

Next week: West Hobart vs Taroona at Olinda Grove at 10am.

WH defeats WW 2-1

From special field reporter Stephen

We had a wonderful win this week against our old adversary Waimea Whirlwind. The final score was 2-1 with Nadia and Anna (AJ) Jamison booting goals. There were also several near scoring shots, including one from Anna S-M.

Your correspondent has been reliably informed (by Julie Jamison) that Anna's goal was a direct result of her mother’s side of the genetic pool. Anna J's grandparents were visiting from the mainland for the wonderful occasion.

Julie with her antecedents

We didn't appear as coordinated as usual this time, with 'groups' of West Hobart players attacking the ball and getting in each other’s way. Cory was absent this week and much missed.

Apart from that, the weather was lovely and we won! Well done, Team.

Special thanks to Stephen and Karen for this week's report and photos. Peter and Sally couldn't attend, as Alice Cox had a rotten cold.

West Hobart plays hard for good win

West Hobart vs New Town Matildas
Final Score: 2 - 1

Goal Scorers: Rhianna & Nadia

Goalies: Josie & Bella

This week we played like a team of champions and deserved our win against worthy opponents.

Although West Hobart started the match in a distracted manner, allowing the Matildas to notch a score from a lofted kick over the goalie's head in the first minute, we then reacted by lifting our game and playing at a far higher standard for the rest of the match.

Amber contributed some strong and defensive play in the first half, blocking and following up well. We were very unlucky not to score, as the ball hit the crossbar of the goal - not once, but twice!

At half time the score stood at 1-0, advantage to the Matildas.

Throughout the second half, the whole team was thinking and passing well to each other. It was far smarter play, our skills have definitely improved since the beginning of the season. The score moved to 1-1 after Rhianna accurately found the back of the net about 10 minutes into the second half.

AJ attacked throughout the game, using the space well, bringing many balls up from deep in defensive mid-field, right to the goals, then cross-kicking well. Jacinta was active around goal and unlucky not to score. Alice C tackled unflinchingly with flashes of fast acceleration but was frustrated in her attempts to defeat the Matildas' goalie.

Victory was cemented when a beautiful cross from Millie gave Nadia a perfect opportunity to tip the ball into goal.
